This pictorial history is only the second of its kind to trace the 30-plus-year history of Amtrak, beginning with a look at the rise amtrak cascades and fall of privately run passenger train service followed by a look at Amtrak's infant stage from 1971 through 1976. Amtrak Cascades - The Amtrak Cascades is a passenger train route operated by Amtrak in partnership with the states of Washington and Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada. The corridor runs 156 miles (251 km) from Vancouver, British Columbia south to Seattle, Washington, continuing 310 miles (499 km) south via Portland, Oregon to Eugene, Oregon.

Pacific Central Station (Vancouver) - Pacific Central Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is a railway station which acts as the western terminus of VIA Rail's cross-country The Canadian to Toronto, and the northern terminus of Amtrak's Cascades to Seattle. Until VIA Rail took over operations around 1979, passenger trains went further west to the Canadian Pacific Railwayā€™s Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver, which is now used by the SkyTrain and the West Coast Express commuter railway.

Cascades Rapids - The Cascades Rapids (sometimes called "Cascade Falls") is an area of rapids in the Columbia River where travelers by boat along the river were forced to either portage boats and supplies or pull boats up with ropes. It is generally held that these rapids or cascades (or the many cascades along the Columbia River Gorge in this area) gave rise to the name for the surrounding mountains: the Cascade Range.
