National Association of Railroad Passengers - The National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP) was founded on May 18, 1967 to lobby for the continuation of passenger trains in the United States. Its lobbying efforts were hampered somewhat by Democratic opposition to any sort of subsidies to the privately-owned railroads, and Republican opposition to nationalization of the railroad industry.
Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad - The Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E) known colloquially as the "Roarin' Elgin", was an interurban railroad that operated commuter trains between Wells Street in downtown Chicago and Aurora, Batavia, Elgin, and Geneva, with several branch lines. Wounded by the increased use of automobiles after World War II, the CA&E quite abruptly ended passenger service in 1957.
Railroad terminals of Chicago - During the heyday of rail transportation in the first half of the twentieth century, Chicago reigned as the undisputed railroad center of the United States and was served by six intercity train terminals. With the decline of rail passenger service many of these facilities disappeared; today only Union Station remains in use in a substantially original form, and is the only one served by Amtrak intercity trains.
